What is lime?
Granulate lime that is applied to lawns is essentially ground limestone. Lime is available in the form of calcitic limestone (calcium carbonate) or dolomitic limestone (calcium and magnesium carbonates).
Who should receive a lime treatment?
The primary use of lime is to raise the soil pH level. Performing a soil test is needed to determine if the soil pH level is too low (below 6.5). Typically most lawns in Ontario and Quebec have a soil pH 6.5 or higher. However, in areas where soil pH is too low, lawn health is effected as nutrients in the soil are unavailable to the grass plant.
What are the benefits of lime?
On lawns with a low soil pH (acidic soil), lime will neutralize its acidity and raise the pH. This enables the grass plant to access nutrients that are not available under acidic conditions. Depending on the lime product, it also adds calcium and magnesium to the soil.
What do I need to do?
Nothing. Lime treatments are typically performed in the fall or spring when rainfall is more prevalent. The ground limestone particle will break down with water.
