Core Aeration and Overseeding

Core Aeration and Overseeding

What is Core Aeration and Overseeding?
During this process we core aerate your lawn to remove soil cores to a depth of 1 to 2 inches. These cores are left on the lawn to break down naturally with regular mowing and watering. Immediately after we core aerate, we spread our custom blended seed over the lawn. The seed germinates in the holes created by the aeration.

We use 100% perennial ryegrass seed in this process. This seed is a custom blend made up of 3 varieties of perennial ryegrass that we select each year based on their overall quality as demonstrated by the world renowned National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP). This blend is extremely high quality that is exclusive to us and can not be purchased in local stores or by other service companies. We ensure its purity and the absence of weed seeds and annual grasses.

Who should receive a Core Aeration and Overseeding?
Just as every lawn will benefit from a core aeration, adding seed to this process only increases its benefit. Along with a sound fertility program, the best way to thicken an established lawn is to core aerate and overseed annually.

If you have a thin lawn or bare areas in your lawn due to insect, severe drought or shade stress, core aeration and overseeding may not be enough to establish and fill in these areas. These types of situations are better addressed by providing a topdressing of our organic compost and seeding with our Sun Mix or Shade Mix seed blends. See the link to this service on this web site for more information.

What are the benefits of Core Aeration and Overseeding?
All the benefits provided by core aeration plus:

  • The introduction of seed thickens an established lawn.
  • Utilizes endophyte enhanced grass seed that is more resistant to insect attack such as chinch bug, billbug and sod webworm.
  • Provides diversity to the lawn to better defend against disease damage.
  • Perennial ryegrass is resistant to Necrotic Ring Spot (NRS) a common disease on Canadian lawns.
  • Perennial ryegrass provides improved wear tolerance for heavy traffic and play areas.
  • Perennial ryegrass also germinates quickly and with minimal soil contact.

What do I need to do?
Water! Water! Water! As with all seeding, the success of this service is dependent on your ability to keep the seeded areas moist until the new seed has germinated and becomes established. We perform this service during seasons when rainfall is more prevalent; however, we can not always rely on natural rainfall. This will mean a regular watering routine on your part to keep the lawn moist for up to 3 weeks.
