Sulphur Treatment

What is a sulphur treatment?
After nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK), sulphur, calcium and magnesium are considered essential nutrients for plant health. Sulphur is a component in amino acids, vitamins and proteins. It is absorbed by the turfgrass and incorporated into proteins. The main source of sulphur in the soil is organic matter. This is why soils with low organic matter (particularly sandy soils) need sulphur supplements. Many types of sulphur products can be applied to bare soil, such as in agriculture or to your soil before laying sod. However, applying sulphur to existing turf requires a specialized product. Our granulated form of elemental sulphur ensures an even distribution of the highest concentration of sulphur possible. Sulphur applications are best done in the spring and fall.

Who should receive a sulphur treatment?
Applying sulphur will supplement the soil’s sulphur level and can lower the pH of alkaline soils. Many lawns across Ontario and Quebec have a neutral or high pH level (7.0 or higher), making sulphur a good fit.

What are the benefits of sulphur?
A low sulphur level results in protein deficiencies that can result in impaired growth. Diseases such as powdery mildew and necrotic ring spot (NRS) favour lawns with a low sulphur level or high pH. Sulphur can also help the lawn utilize other nutrients, such as nitrogen, providing improved colour. A summary of sulphur’s benefits include:

  • An important plant nutrient for healthy growth.
  • Ensures vigorous growth by improving protein and other nutrient availability for the lawn.
  • Helps defend against conditions that favour diseases such as necrotic ring spot (NRS) and powdery mildew.
  • Ideal for lawns with low organic matter.
  • Can lower neutral or high pH (alkaline) soils.
  • A high quality, granulated product with a high sulphur concentration.

What do I need to do?
Nothing. Sulphur treatments are typically performed in the fall or spring when rainfall is more prevalent. The sulphur particle will break down with water.
