Topdressing

What is Topdressing?
Our topdressing is a process of applying a high quality marine compost (Biosol) over the lawn with our specialized topdress spreader. Biosol is superior to typical soil mixes purchased from local stores. It is a composted blend of all natural ingredients including shell fish meal (crab and lobster), kelp (seaweed), manure and peat moss. This blend is bagged, not bulk, and ensures:

  • No weed seeds.
  • No offensive odour.
  • High level of naturally derived nutrients.
  • High capacity to retain moisture.
  • Finely screened to reduce waste and speed compost incorporation into the lawn.

Due to its fine texture and high nutrient content, only 1/8 inch of topdressing is required. Rather than sitting on top of the grass, it is most effective when it filters down into the lawn’s thatch and soil surface. Unlike typical topdressing work, you are not left with a mess of soil on your lawn, driveway or walkways that can be tracked into the house.

Who should receive a Topdressing?
Every lawn will benefit from adding organic compost. Many homeowners buy a truckload of compost or soil mix from a local garden centre and have it dumped on their driveway, where it sits for a few weeks while weekends are spent shoveling it onto the lawn. Often times, too much is applied, leading to lawn damage instead of improvement, not to mention the mess created on the driveway or walkways. The mess, labour, and frustration this creates can be avoided.

What are the benefits of Topdressing?
Topdressing is the single most effective way to add organic matter to your lawn. Compost topdressing is not intended to level an uneven lawn. Its intent is to improve the lawn’s growing environment. The benefits are many, including:

  • The composted organic material feeds the soil, including soil microorganisms, improving the long term health of the lawn.
  • High quality, weed-free, organic compost that is a fine grain material high in micronutrients.
  • Ideal for established lawns with poor soils.
  • One of the most effective biological controls of thatch.
  • An excellent pro-active measure to naturally prepare the lawn for drought conditions as it improves soil structure and moisture holding capacity.
  • Clean and efficiently performed. No mound of topsoil on the driveway.
  • Saves time and effort over doing it yourself.

What do I need to do?
Nothing. Watering or rainfall after our treatment will help move the topdressing into the thatch, however this will occur on its own after a few days. Do not mow the lawn until this has occurred. We never recommend that you bag your lawn clippings, but this is especially important after topdressing.
